Italian lake district

Although sometimes it’s referred to as the “Lake region of Italy”, it is technically not a region but just an area. And a big one too indeed! It stretches across the northern part of Italy, touching 4 different regions and including 6 different lakes: Orta, Maggiore, Como, Lugano, Iseo, Garda. Naturally Italy has many other lakes across the country, but these are the famous ones that are worldly known as the Lake District.

Geographically the Lake District is closed on the north-eastern part by the Alps, that separate this part of Italy from Switzerland, and in south-west from the River Po, the longest river of our country.

Let’s take a glance to the 3 lakes most requested:

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy and touches 3 different regions: Lombardia, Veneto and Trentino. A splendid wide-open lake that among its beauties finds famous attractions as Villa Albertini or the 13th Century Roman Castle-Town of Sirmione. It is often visited during a popular day trip from Verona, being located just 50minutes away from the City of Romeo and Juliet.

Lake Como is probably thanks to George Clooney the most famous lake of the Italian Lake District. Although not only George owns a villa around this beautiful lake! Quite a lot of famous stars like Madonna, Sylvester Stallone, Versace, etc own or have owned proprieties around this marvellous Lake. Surrounded by the spectacular Alps this silent paradise has been a popular retreat since Roman times. A picturesque landscape filled with charming villages and magnificent baroque Villas.

Lake Maggiore a stunning beauty of nature, art and history. In the past, many foreign and Italian artist have fallen in love with its banks that touch 2 of the Italian regions of the Lake District, Piemonte and Lombardia, and Switzerland too in the far north. You can lose your way through the fascinating Borromee Islands or in the charming little cobblestone alleys of the little gem of Stresa.
